Question: Can the way you talk and dress keep you from getting the Holy Ghost? I use to want to wear pants and cut my hair, and when I wanted to do that I felt that I was falling away from God. Now it doesn`t bother me when people look at me in public because I`m wearing a skirt, because I know that I`m letting my light shine. It doesn`t bother me when people ask me why I wear skirts everyday. I don`t want to wear pants as much as I used to, I don`t want to cut my hair, and I don`t talk like I used to. Now that I don`t want to do all this stuff anymore, I feel like I`m getting closer to God. Thank you.

Answer: It seems to us that you have answered your own question. Obviously, the way we draw near to God is by obeying Him. Disobedience places a wall between us and God. As Isaiah 59:2 says, 'Your iniquities have separated you from your God; and your sins have hidden His face from you, so that He will not hear.' This is why the prerequisite for receiving the Holy Ghost is repentance, which is a change in direction. Proverbs 1:23 says, 'Turn at my rebuke; surely I will pour out my spirit on you.' After David sinned with Bathsheba, he prayed, 'Do not cast me away from Your presence, and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me' (Psalms 51:11). He prayed this way because he was concerned that his poor conduct had put distance between him and his God.
