Question: I heard someone speaking of how one can confuse gifting with anointing. How is that? I thought anointing was a gift. Can you explain?

Answer: A person is anointed when he receives the gift of the Holy Spirit. 'Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee' (2 Corinthians 1:21-22). This anointing brings with is various spiritual gifts. 'There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit...11 But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills' (1 Corinthians 12:4,11). One way of thinking about it is that the anointing (the Spirit) is the fuel that empowers all of the gifts.
