Question: What are the proof texts for Isaiah 11:1 that will show who this prophecy refers to?

Answer: Isaiah 11:1 says, 'There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots.'

Since Jesse was the father of King David, we know that this passage is referring to someone who descends from David. Romans 1:3 says, 'Jesus Christ our Lord, who was born of the seed of David according to the flesh.'

Isaiah 11:2 says of this Rod, 'The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him....' In Luke 4:18 Jesus said of Himself, 'The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.'

Isaiah 11:3 says, 'And He shall not judge by the sight of His eyes, nor decide by the hearing of His ears; but with righteousness He shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth.' In John 5:30 Jesus said, 'I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me.'

Isaiah 11:4 says, 'He shall strike the earth with the rod of His mouth.....' Speaking of Jesus Christ, Revelation 19:15 says, 'Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron.''

Isaiah 11:4 also says, 'And with the breath of His lips He shall slay the wicked.' 2 Thessalonians 2:8 says of Jesus, 'And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord will consume with the breath of His mouth and destroy with the brightness of His coming.'

We believe it is reasonable to conclude from these verses that the Rod of Jesse is the Lord Jesus Christ.
